Best of the Minors: August

Coming into the last full month of the Minor League season (all of the affiliates have about five games each in September before the playoffs), it’s time to look back once again to see who performed the best at each level. Here are the players of the month at each level for the month of August.

Lehigh Valley IronPigs:

Cody Overbeck, 1B. Overbeck has struggled to find offensive success this season, batting a mere .262 with just 26 RBI in 63 games since being called up from Reading. But, Overbeck turned it around in the month of August, getting hot at the plate and getting a hit in 9 of his last 10 games. His three homeruns in August also doubled his season total.

August Stats: .338 AVG in 22 games, 11 RBI, .907 OPS

Joe Savery, Relief Pitcher. Savery is a solid prospect, but is still deciding whether to play first base or pitch. Judging by his numbers in August, Savery could have a bright future in relieving. Savery gave up just one earned run in 14 and 2/3 innings over the course of August, and picked up a pair of wins in the process. This standout month isn’t too shocking, as Savery has a season ERA of 1.96 in Lehigh Valley.

August Stats: 2-0, 0.61 ERA in 11 games, 14.2 IP, 16 Ks

Reading Phillies:

Brent Clevlen, RF. Clevlen isn’t a prospect, he’s a cup-of-coffee guy that’s been in professional baseball since 2002, but that doesn’t mean Phillies fans can’t be excited that he had a great month. Thanks in part to an 8 game hitting streak in the middle of the month, Clevlen’s average was .323 in August. This is the first month he’s been in the organization, since he was bought from the Reds.

August Stats: .323 AVG in 27 games, 4 HR, 17 RBI, 1.002 OPS

Tyler Cloyd, Starting Pitcher. Cloyd had an impressive month for the R-Phillies. four of his five starts in August were considered quality starts (to be a quality start the starting pitcher must go six or more innings and give up less than four runs), with his only non-quality start coming on August 10, when he gave four runs in six innings. Cloyd’s ERA in August was a mere 1.91, down almost a full point from his season ERA of 2.88.

August Stats: 2-0, 1.91 in 6 starts, 33 IP, 38 Ks

Clearwater Threshers

Brandon Tripp, Outfielder. Tripp has really proved himself in the month of August, and his stats might even lead him to a promotion as players are shifted around because of the MLB roster expansion. Tripp has been tearing up opposing pitching, hitting .388 with an OPS (On base percentage plus slugging) of 1.035, 300 points higher than what would be considered an “average” OPS. Tripp has also been perfect in the field this whole season, not committing a fielding error in the 38 games he has played for the Threshers.

August Stats: .388 AVG in 28 games, 5 HR, 16 RBI, 1.035 OPS

Julio Rodriguez, Starting Pitcher. What more can I possibly say about Julio? Check out this story.

August Stats: 2-1, 1.50 ERA in 5 starts, 30 IP, 41 Ks

Lakewood Blueclaws

Carlos Alonso, 3B. Alonso, like Tripp, has been a great late-season addition, hitting .317 since being called up form WIlliamsport in July. August has been, as expected, a great month, as Alonso hit a whopping .344 in 28 games. He also had 15 RBIs

August Stats: .344 AVG in 28 games, 7 doubles, 15 RBI, .932 OPS

Austin Wright, Starting Pitcher. At the pace he’s going, Wright might be a “Baby Ace” by next year. In six starts for Lakewood, Wright has acquired a 1.50 ERA and has struck out 36.

August Stats: 1-1, 1.50 ERA in 6 starts, 30 IP, 36 Ks

Williamsport Crosscutters:

Peter Lavin, OF. August Stats: .331 AVG in 28 games, 9 RBI, .839 OPS
